Visit a Roche city: São Paulo

    August 26, 2011 9:21 AM | TedM

    A city that never sleeps

S?o Paulo is the engine of Brazils rapid economic development. Brazil is a gigantic country that covers over half of the South American continent, and its pulsating economic heart is the southeastern city of S?o Paulo. Founded by Portuguese explorers in 1554, S?o Paulo has grown into one of the worlds largest cities, with a population of 11 million. Like any metropolis, it suffers from traffic jams, pollution and crime. But for most people who live in Sampa as it is affectionately called it is the most energetic, culturally diverse and fascinating place on the planet.

Roche US: New Jersey, a thriving economic power

    June 30, 2011 5:00 PM | TedM

Since colonial times, New Jersey has been a crossroads between New York City, one of the worlds major financial centres to the east, and Philadelphia, birthplace of the USA to the west. To this day, that reputation remains. Youre from New Jersey? What highway exit? is a caustic remark that residents deflect with a smile. They know that New Jersey is not just a congested highway to somewhere else. One of the smallest states in the US, it is a thriving economic power, a centre of innovation and technology and a geological wonder.

Roche Madrid: a meeting with Paco

    May 25, 2011 8:00 PM | TedM

    No place closer to heaven

For Madrile?os, the character of the local people and the rich, multifaceted life of their city put it in a category all its own.

In 1561, Spanish King Philip II moved his capital to a small town on a plateau (660 m) in the centre of the country. Originally known in Arabic as al-Majrit, the city of Madrid became the administrative centre for Spains powerful empire after the reconquest of the country from the Moors and the discovery of vast riches in the New World. Philip IIs successors constructed a lavish royal palace, as well as broad avenues, expansive parks and impressive museums. Today, Madrid is a metropolis of three million people, the political capital of the EUs second largest country and a busy economic hub. It is also the headquarters of Roche Pharma Spain.

    A focus on Roche Brazil

    May 8, 2011 11:00 AM | TedM

    Growing with a dynamic economy

Roche will celebrate 80 years in Brazil in 2011

People sometimes forget just how big this country is, said Adriano Treve, General Manager Pharmaceuticals. You could put all of the 27 member states of the EU inside Brazil and still not cover much of the Amazon basin. We have sales reps in charge of a territory the size of France or Germany. Geographic size is not the only challenge of doing business in Brazil. In vast stretches of the interior, the infrastructure is rudimentary, and tremendous growth in the cities has stretched resources to the breaking point. Economically, there is still a huge gap between top income earners and residents of the sprawling favelas (urban slums). Nevertheless, rising income levels are creating a new middle class and there is a sense of economic dynamism and optimism about the future.
