My name is Marisa Bottarelli, Im working as an Internal Auditor at Roche Basel and I travel the world for my job. I like to play the piano and since I moved to Switzerland, I am learning how to ski. I always wanted to travel and take a 6 month trip around the world, and now Im lucky enough to do that for work.Where did you study?
I studied International Economics and Management in Milan at Bocconi University and I studied one semester at HSG in St. Gallen. Then before I joined Roche I worked as an external Auditor at KPMG in Milan.
In which Roche location are you currently working?
Im based with a team of 10 people at Roche in Basel which is actually in the heart of the city but I actually spend most of my time at different Roche offices around the world.
What can you tell us about that location?
Basel is actually the perfect base for a traveling job: Train station, airport and my office are in a reaching distance of 10-15 minutes. The city has a rich culture, a charming old town and international population combined with helpful local people. It has so many museums and if you are interested in art you are at the right place here.
Why did you decide to join Roche?
I went to a Swiss school in Milan which made me curious about Switzerland. I speak German but I feel more at ease with English, and Basel is international enough to get along with English without any problem, even if it certainly helps to speak German.
What is your current job
I work in the Financial Compliance Department which is part of the Group Audit function. The main focus of our department is to ensure that proper internal controls are implemented in the organization to provide reasonable assurance regarding the reliability of financial reporting and the preparation of financial statements.
What makes it such a great job?
The best part of my work is that it requires a lot of traveling. We visit affiliates twice a year and work very closely with their teams. I consult especially for Italy and the UK, but also for all finance and treasury affiliates. Last year I was responsible for Asia and that was really challenging but I enjoyed it so much. I like to understand how to manage intercultural differences at work.
Can you pick attributes of Roche and explain in detail what they mean to you?
Work-life balance, respect and future career opportunities are the most important for me.
I have regular meetings and deadlines but I can still manage my time in a flexible way. When I travel for work I try to use the opportunity and visit the cities as much as possible, mainly in the evenings.
I really dont feel the hierarchy within the company, we have an open door culture so I can always ask questions or raise doubts - more or less at every time. This encourages employees to speak up, what makes our work more efficient.
I get a wide understanding of the business by seeing a lot of different Roche affiliates which enriches my business knowledge. Its the perfect starting point for my career I know one cannot do this job forever because its physically challenging as well but I would like to stay at headquarters for my future career in finance, you never know what comes next Roche opens so many doors.
Why is Roche a great place to work?
Roche is a great place to work because there is a multicultural environment this enriches yourself and the opportunities are outstanding.
How would you describe the people working here?
People here are more flexible than in other companies and whenever possible, they try to think out of the box thats where innovation at Roche comes from.
What would you advise job seekers who want to join us?
If you are motivated and willing to travel, you will have many great opportunities and Roche values the contribution of every person. Even if Auditors are not directly linked to research it gives you a good feeling to work for a company that has an important mission for humankind.
Thanks for your story!
