Talk about a Roche job: Director Innovation & IP Management - R&D Efficiency
Meet Jochen Hurlebaus who is hiring a Director Innovation & IP Management - R&D Efficiency inMunich, GermanyTell us a bit about yourself:
My background is originally in Science, but with a M.Sc. in Mathematical Ecology and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Biology and Bioinformatics I have always been working interdisciplinary. Before joining Roche I have worked as a Postdoc in a small Biotech company. During my time at Roche I was supported to work on an Executive MBA, further broadening my interdisciplinary eduction.
What is your current job?
As the Head of Central R&D Services - Innovation & IP Management I have the opportunity to lead a small team of people that can bring in creative new ideas about how we define our future product portfolio, what technological fields might be usefull, how we define an IP-strategy, generate and collect ideas throughout Roche, work with "Open Innovation" concepts, and also optimize the R&D process as well as interactions between the different functions. It is a real "bridging function" and our ways to bring in creative, positive change are very wellcome by the organization. Overall we therefore help Roche to bring In-Vitro Diagnostics to the next level and create value for patients and the Healthcare System. Creation of "Medical Value" also in the field of Personalized Healthcare is a key focus for all of us.
Why did you decide to join Roche?
At the time (that is 10 years ago) Roche had an interdiscplinary job as a Project Leader for Software development for microarrays. Clearly, this was my opportunity given my background in Mathematics, Bioinformatics and Biology. Since it is one of the worlds biggest Pharma Companies and its Diagnotics Division is the leader in IVD it was clear to me that it is a great opportunity. During the interviews I got the feeling that Roche is an open minded, honest company that values highly qualified people and provides a creative working environment.
In which Roche location are you currently working?
I am based in Penzberg, about 40 kilometer south of Munich: "We work where others come for vacation". There are almost 5000 people working here on site and the complete value chains of Pharma and Diagnocstics from early research over development to production and logicits are represented here. I personally live in Munich since I enjoy the city life and have quite a lot of friends here. But I also do a lot of skiing and Mountain-Biking. Both obviously is possible right in front of our door step. Also sailing is possible on lake Starnberg, even though the wind is usually not really reliable. I like also the closeness to Italy, so once the weather is not good in the north of the Alps you can make it to the south in just 3 hours. Noteworthy definetly is Munich airport. You can fly almost anywhere with a non-stop connection. Really a cool thing for vacation and for business travel.
What can you tell about the current job opening in your team?
My department exists for less than 3 years and has been growing continiously. We have achieved many things in the field of Innovation and IP Management in the very early part of product development, the "Technology" part. Now we also focus more on the later part of the development process and the person to be hired for the open position will be the major driver for this. We currently experience significant growth and will have to bring more products through our development funnel, while keeping the superior quality and following the increasing need to show "Medical Value" for the patient as well as "Health Economics" benefit for the payor. There are many ways we can approach this and the holder of the position will need excellent analytical skills, creative ideas and the right personal & communication skills to also implement changes.
What makes this such a great job?
This is a great job for people with great ideas and a strong drive to implement them. Within Roche you will experience a lot of trust once you are a little bit established and will then be able to bring in and implement creative new ideas that bring the organization forward.
What kind of training do you provide in this job to get them up to speed and to let them progress in their career?
Training is a key element for all of us and anything which supports interdisciplinary thinking and working should be possible. Just by working with the different functions and sites there will be a significant amount of learning for new Roche employees.People are interesting in understanding their career paths.
What are common next jobs once they have performed well in the current position for a couple of years?
Since we are working directly with R&D, the Life-Cycle-Teams and many other functions we all have a broad nethwork. There are therefore multiple possibilities to continue the career. It will also depend on your former job and what other experience you will already bring with you.
What kind of person would really work well in your team?
We are very open minded, honest and support each other in the team whenever needed. At the same time we want to change things to the positive and coninuously reinvent ourselves. Flexibility is therefore a must and someone that likes routine would probably not fit into our team.
What would you advise job seekers who want to join us?
We would probably benefit most from a new team member that has experience with product development processes and their optimization in a different, complex industry.
