The Challenge to cope with Present and Future Genomic Information

Bioinformatics has to cope with a rapidly increasing data flux by setting up and integrating diverse genomic databases for efficient data analysis and mining. High-throughput sequence analyses and comparisons of large genomes require an extensive and well integrated set of powerful sequence analysis and modelling methods, database management systems and graphical interactive display tools for the semi-automated handling of an enormous amount of genomic information.

Apart from genome analysis, the bioinformatics group is active in various other areas. For gene expression analysis, tools were developed to annotate chip experiments with controlled vocabularies, to analyse chip experiments using a range of statistical methods, to project gene expression results onto metabolic and signalling pathways, to classify gene expression patterns and to mine the vast amount of gene expression data available at Roche. All these tools are tightly integrated with the genome analysis databases and tools.
