Study Data Manager
Delivering quality data from clinical trials is the goal of Study Data Managers. In this varied and challenging role, we are responsible for the leadership, planning and delivery of all the data management activities involved in carrying out studies into potential new therapies.
Leadership is a key part of our role as we work to create strong teams of data managers by focusing on high performance and motivating our teams to deliver results. Empowering people to take responsibility in an environment of trust, we support, train and coach individuals.
Planning is also vital as SDMs help to develop protocols, case report forms, data review documents and plans for resourcing, timelines, risk management and quality. We make sure everything related to data management is documented and test the databases.
Once the trial is under way, we oversee the work of the data managers who review the data being entered in the database about patients. They identify any discrepancies - such as missing information or illogical dates - and check back with the sites carrying out trials.
We run checks and make sure that everything looks as it should which can be a really enjoyable part of the job if you enjoy detail and accuracy. When we are satisfied that the data is complete and of the highest quality, we lock the database and transfer it to other teams for clinical evaluation and statistical analysis. That involvement through different stages of a trial ensures that the role is very varied and always full of new challenges.
As SDMs, we also have an influential role; we are important members of the Study Management Teams (SMT), updating, advising and influencing them on data management issues. We are the central point of contact for any data management issues so there is a great deal of liaison with other functions. As our role is global, it is also really interesting and rewarding to work with colleagues from different cultures who work in different ways.
SDMs also develop strong working relationships with investigators, monitors and contract research organisations (CRO). We support the CRO working on our process and help maintain team motivation which can bring some enjoyable challenges!
Being based in the UK enables us to enjoy the excellent facilities of our UK head office. It is a great place to work, managing to encourage a good work culture without the atmosphere being too formal. Being part of a global team in a large company with a strong portfolio and pipeline also provides us with opportunities to develop our knowledge and skills. There is a great variety of studies in different therapeutic areas and people are very supportive if you want to work on another study or to move into a different role.
So could you join us? Roche is on the look out for more talented individuals; check out the latest opportunities or register in the talent pool.
