The Position

The Disease Area Director has three key responsibilities: providing Business strategic direction to Early Development molecule teams within Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) and leading the strategy and activities of the associated Business subteams; Leading or actively contributing to the development of Disease Area and Portfolio Commercialization Strategies for the Business Unit; and providing Business recommendations on in-licensing or out-licensing opportunities in partnership with Pharma Partnering or Genentech (gRED) Business Development.  The role on the Early Development Core Teams will include providing commercial inputs into the development of Lifecycle Plans (LCPs) and Target Product Profiles (TPPs) for each assigned molecule; leading the development of global business plans and revenue forecasts, and recommending commercial strategies. The Director will be expected to gather input from and provide strategic information to business partners within affiliate organizations, including the US, EU and emerging markets, to aid in the development of global product plans for pipeline molecules. The Director will work closely with multiple functional leaders, including Lifecycle Leaders, Project Team Leaders, International Business Leaders, US Marketing Directors, International Business Analysts, International Pricing Strategy Leads, Biomarker and Epidemiology Medical Leads, International Medical Affairs Leaders, and Development Team Leaders to ensure molecule development plans and Disease Strategies reflect business priorities, and will be responsible for executing appropriate activities in collaboration with functional partners to ensure that goals are achieved. The Director will develop the Business Case supporting Lifecycle Investment decisions, and will act as the interim International Business Leader as programs transition to Lifecycle Teams.  The Director will provide Business input and strategic expertise to Research, Development, Pharma Partnering and gRED Business Development to optimize the potential future market value of new product opportunities. The Director is expected to make significant contributions to the business unit's product pipeline strategy, oversee multiple products in the development pipeline, and consistently demonstrate the ability to integrate functional expertise with business knowledge to propose solutions in complex cross- functional teams. Leverages knowledge of development process and market needs to create innovative strategies for future success in the global market and can effectively negotiate with peers to achieve goals across multiple products and diseases. Incumbents in the Director role, as with all other employees, are fully accountable for compliance with all laws, regulations and policies that govern the conduct of Roche and Genentech activities. As an individual contributor, he/she is not only accountable for his/her own compliance, but is expected to be a role model for others by demonstrating full knowledge and commitment to all applicable policies.  Monitors adherence to company policies and guidelines and acts according to established procedures to ensure all issues are addressed and resolved as required.

    • Bachelors Degree (Marketing, Business Management, or Science discipline is a plus)
    • MBA or other related graduate-level degree is preferred (Master's or Doctoral degree in a life sciences field is a plus)
    • 8 years or more previous experience in marketing, market research, competitive intelligence, business development, field sales management, or managed care in the pharmaceutical/biotech/or other related industry, with at least 3 years' previous experience in marketing
    • Previous experience in leading the development and implementation of brand/product strategy and vision required (e.g. Brand Director, International Business Leader, International Medical Affairs Leader, Project Team Leader)
    • Demonstrated understanding of therapeutic area
    • Demonstrated ability to lead development and execution of complex plans across multiple priorities
    • Previous field sales management experience is preferred
    • Previous people management experience is required
    • Must demonstrate some past experience with, and knowledge of, the drug development process (pre-clinical and Phase I - III); has worked on core team related project such as Line Extensions
    • Must demonstrate strong knowledge of product development, regulatory and clinical affairs
    • Must demonstrate previous experience in, and strong abilities for, establishing relationships with key opinion leaders and other relevant, external influencers
    • Must demonstrate strong knowledge of message development and clinical publications' planning
    • Proven track record for consistently meeting or exceeding financial and/or other quantitative targets, as well as qualitative goals
    • Previous experience in completing & implementing attainable business plans
    • Business travel, by air or car, is required for regular internal and external business meetings
