Creating value for people from data

Being part of a project that directly supports the efforts of increasing the number of performed COVID-19 antibody and virus tests has been very rewarding. Learn more about Anna's work and her motivation as a Data Analytics Engineer at Roche Diagnostics in Rotkreuz.

My name is Anna and I started working as a Data Analytics Engineer at Roche Diagnostics in Rotkreuz in June 2020.

Our team’s main goal is to push forward the digitalization process at Roche to create value from data. We work closely together with other teams to assess their business needs and create new opportunities. The applications we are working on are immediately used by the colleagues responsible for the consumable’s distribution. I highly value the interdisciplinary exchange across departments as it allows us to think of innovative but at the same time practical ideas that impact people right away.

Our impact

The project I am working on has been very rewarding as it directly supports the efforts of increasing the number of performed COVID-19 antibody and virus tests. The fully automated testing systems developed and produced by Roche are able to perform daily up to 2000 or 4000 tests respectively.  Because of this year’s events the demand  for these systems and the disposable components like tubes needed to perform the tests has increased. We had to put a lot of effort into making sure that we could meet this demand.

Digitalization has been a crucial part in supporting and monitoring the Supply Chain in its adaption process. By consolidating existing data to and from the suppliers, a data pipeline was created. We built visualization charts from real time information that allow the data to be monitored and insights about potential bottlenecks to be gained. Through this digitalization process we are able to save time and resources and ensure the swift distribution of high-demand products to the patients.

The place to Work

I appreciate the flexible working hours and the opportunity to work from home, but if possible I also enjoy to meet my colleagues for meetings that benefit from being in-person. We use this times to give feedback to each other and collaborate hands on. My work place in Rotkreuz is located on a highly modern campus in the heart of Switzerland in midst of beautiful nature, while still being close to major cities.

Roche Diagnostics is an international company.  In my day to day I am able to connect and work with people from across the world who have different experiences and perspectives. I believe that it is from such exchanges that we are able to continuously learn from each other and foster innovation.

With current events, being able to adapt to new situations has become crucial. This has certainly not come without its challenges, but I feel like as a team we have been able to find a rhythm that works well.

Our culture

At Roche I have been able to start to contribute from the get go, even under less than ideal (stay-at-home) circumstances - not a usual setting to start in a new team. Nonetheless, with the support of my colleagues I was able to quickly dive into the project and contribute my own ideas early on. I believe that this environment of support and empowerment is what ultimately results in success and a strong team. Open exchange of ideas is encouraged here, creating a work environment that is both motivating and fulfilling.
