Tell us about yourself.
My name is Morgane Scharly, I’m a Talent Marketing Partner working in the People & Culture department at Roche headquarters in Basel. Outside of work, I’m the lovely mom of a Golden Retriever named Sarabi and a Persian cat named Lilou and I spend most of my free time baking pastries.

What first drew you to Roche?
In 2017, while finishing my Master’s in Digital Marketing & Communications, I was looking for an internship to gain practical experience. I stumbled across a posting at Roche. To be honest, I didn’t know much about the pharmaceutical world, but I sensed there was an opportunity to work with a company that made a real difference in people’s lives. Little did I know then that this step would turn into a journey of personal growth, resilience, and finding purpose in ways I never anticipated.

Soon after I started, my grandfather passed away from lung cancer. This personal loss transformed the way I saw my role at Roche; suddenly, the work became deeply meaningful to me. Every day, I felt that, in some small way, I was part of something bigger—something that could one day save lives. This realization cemented my desire to continue with Roche beyond the internship.

Morgane Scharly
Talent Marketing Partner
After your internship, you moved into a contractor position. What motivated that transition?
When my internship ended, there wasn’t an immediate full-time role available, so I explored options elsewhere. I even received a promising offer from another company in the cigars industry, but it didn’t align with the values I had come to cherish during my time at Roche. I wanted a role that made a positive impact, and I was willing to take a risk to stay connected to that purpose.

Not long after, a contractor role opened at Roche in Digital Content Management. The application deadline was minutes away, but I went for it, trusting that this was the right path for me. I was thrilled when I got the job, and from that moment, I felt a renewed confidence in the choice I had made to stay with Roche.

How does Roche ensure contractor employees feel part of the team?
Being a contractor can sometimes feel like being on the outside, but at Roche, I was welcomed from day one as a full-fledged member of the team. My manager quickly extended my contract from three months to a full year, giving me the chance to settle in and make meaningful contributions. I was given responsibilities, support, and opportunities just like any other team member, and I never felt any distinction between myself and my full-time colleagues. That sense of belonging and respect showed me that Roche genuinely values every person, regardless of their contract status.

How did you transition from a contractor to a permanent employee?
Over time, I had the chance to work across several departments, broadening my experience and perspective within the company. I became part of a network of colleagues who encouraged my growth and championed my abilities. When a full-time role as a Talent Marketing Partner opened up, I knew it was the next step I wanted to take. I applied with confidence, knowing that my experience as a contractor had fully prepared me for this moment.

What qualities do you believe helped you stand out?
I think it was my resilience and genuine commitment to Roche’s mission that made the difference. I held onto my goal of finding a place here, even when the journey was uncertain. I wanted to contribute to a company I believed in, and I worked to bring that energy and optimism into every role I held along the way.

What advice would you give to others considering a contract role?
My advice? Don’t underestimate the impact of a contractor/temporary position. Roche’s inclusive culture treats everyone as an important part of the team, so you’re never “just a contractor.” Take on each opportunity with an open mind, trust your instincts, and don’t hesitate to take that first step. A contractor role could be the beginning of a meaningful journey.

Looking back, I’m proud of the path I’ve taken with Roche. If you’re considering a role here, especially as a contractor, know that you’ll be welcomed and valued. Embrace the journey, and you may just find yourself, like I did, discovering a purpose and passion you hadn’t expected.
