Meet Tin, Global Medical Affairs Controller at Roche

Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, my name is Tin. I was born in Guangzhou, China. I moved to Hong Kong when I was 11, and then to Melbourne, Australia, as an international student when I was 15 years old. I stayed in Australia for over 10 years and graduated from the University of Melbourne. I am married and have a four-year-old daughter. My favourite sport is basketball.

Before joining Roche, I worked in the government sector, for Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), and in the chemical industry. Roche is my first employer in the pharmaceutical sector, and I am enjoying every minute here.

In which Roche location are you currently working and what can you tell us about that location as a work environment?

I currently live and work in Basel at the Roche headquarters as part of an international assignment in Finance. I commute to work by public transport. I am part of a large team – we are like a big family. I worked with part of the team when I held a regional controller role in Singapore. It’s great to catch up with old friends, meet new ones, and to learn from all of them.

Why did you decide to join Roche and why at this location?

I decided to join Roche because of its full commitment to offering patients a better quality of life by driving innovation. I joined Roche China in 2012, moved to the regional office in Singapore, and am now in Basel on my assignment.

I really appreciate the opportunities and experiences open to me on my journey to becoming a well-rounded financial professional. I am grateful to learn from impressive leaders at Roche and I strive to continue to make an impact together with talented and motivated colleagues.

What is your current position at Roche?

My current role is Global Product Development Medical Affairs (PDMA) controller. In this capacity, I manage financials in partnership with the PDMA leadership team. This role excites me every day because I consider it a privilege to be able to work with outstanding PDMA leaders who are fully committed to delivering value to patients. PDMA views finance as a true business partner thanks to the great work of my predecessors, who have left big shoes for me to fill as I want to live up to expectations.

How would you describe Roche as an employer?

I think Roche is very supportive of its employee career development and empowers them to do what’s best for the organisation rather than always telling them what to do.

Leaders show a genuine interest in employees, not just by listening to employee feedback but also by investing tremendous efforts in continuing to improve.

How would you describe the people working here?

People working here have an understanding of the shared mission of our company, and a sense of purpose around it to drive excellence within ourselves on daily basis.

An open culture is what I experience at Roche. I think it facilitates employees to exchange ideas, and fosters a collaborative atmosphere and team spirit!
